American Youth Running Association

Building Health. Building Confidence. Building Futures.

AYRA exists to make running accessible, exciting and meaningful for children across America. Through school-based programs and age-appropriate competition, we help young athletes develop healthy habits, confidence, perseverance and a lifelong love of movement.

One Organization. One Flagship League.

AYRA

The American Youth Running Association — the national organization behind youth running programs, competition standards and championship events.

AYRA Elementary Run League

Our flagship K–5 program: a six-week spring season run inside elementary schools, leading to Regional, State and National Championships.

For Parents

Your Child Doesn't Need to Be a Runner to Become a Runner.

Why Running Helps

Regular movement builds heart health, focus in the classroom and a confidence that carries beyond sports.

What Practices Are Like

Forty-five upbeat minutes of games, relays and running — led by a staff member your child already knows.

What Kids Need

Sneakers, a water bottle and clothes they can move in. Nothing else to buy.

How Advancement Works

Race day at school, then Regionals, States and Nationals for qualifying runners — always at their grade distance.

Does my child need to be fast?

No. AYRA is built for every ability. Practices are designed so a first-time runner and an experienced one both finish the session smiling.

Is it safe for young kids?

Distances are age-appropriate, practices are supervised by school staff, and hydration, weather and rest guidelines are built into every plan.

Does everyone compete?

Yes. Every child races on school race day. Advancement to championships is optional and based on qualifying results.

What do families provide?

Sneakers, water and encouragement. Your school runs the program with materials AYRA supplies.
